Creativity is allowing oneself to make mistakes and art is knowing which ones to keep. Purchasing an artefact is easy but an artefact can only be appreciated if made by oneself. Tile Mosaics is one such piece of artefact and it can be easily made at home. These days custom made mosaics are quickly becoming an “it” industry and it is something that every household is demanding. It is no more a luxury that only the rich and famous can afford.
In this blog you’ll be acquainted with the nitty-gritty of mosaics and how to make one at home just with a bunch of ceramic tiles (you can also use vitrified tiles or any other kind of tile that you can easily crack).
Mosaics! What’s that?
A mosaic is a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small pieces of stones, tiles, glasses, etc. A tile mosaic is a made out broken pieces of mostly ceramic tiles arranged together to make a pattern.
Break Tiles & Bring Smiles
Tiles are easily available and used in every household these days, be it for flooring or installing it in the kitchen, bathroom etc. Tiles for home are very cost effective and cheaper than composite marble. When someone tile up their abode, there are usually some leftover tiles that are tossed into the bin because no one knows what to do with them. Here’s a quick step by step guide to create a tile mosaic at home.
Step 1 – Let your imagination go wild and get a pattern or design in your head to make a mosaic.
Take a poster (Size – according to the desired size of mosaic) and sketch a basic design of how you want your end product to look like. This will work as a blueprint of the mosaic you want to create.
Step 2 – Go to the super mart or to your local hardware store and buy the below mentioned tools and material that you’ll need.
Step 3 – Smashing tiles - a big time stress buster.
Put your safety glasses & gloves and smash some good old tiles and separate them according to colour category and pattern of the tiles. Now, throw away all the smaller pieces and accumulate all the medium sized pieces and file or cut them with the tile cutter.
Step 4 – Lay the tiles on the design you made on the poster and once you are satisfied with the layout, just glue the ceramic tiles to poster.
Once the tiles are set put it in a frame and pour the cement (Should be liquid not runny) all over the poster. Before leaving it to dry off under the sun, quickly wipe of the cement that is covering the tile pieces.
Let the clock tick until it dries and Voila! You have a beautiful tile mosaic.
